Helix Nebula: The Fourth State of Matter Turns into Haute Couture

What happens when a fashion designer stops imitating the universe and starts working with its physics?

Iris van Herpen has an answer: you put plasma on the runway.

With Helix Nebula, created for her Fall 2026 Haute Couture collection Sonic Starquakes, Van Herpen has pushed couture into territory that sounds closer to astrophysics than fashion. The dress brings plasma—the fourth state of matter—into haute couture, enclosing luminous charged particles within sculptural forms of hand-blown glass and placing them in direct electromagnetic dialogue with the human body.

This is not a dress decorated with stars.

The stars are the reference point for the material itself.

Plasma is what matter becomes when sufficient energy strips electrons from atoms, creating a fluid of charged particles. It has no fixed shape or volume. It is the stuff of the Sun and other stars, of lightning, auroras and the luminous structures that fill interstellar space. In fact, plasma is estimated to constitute roughly 99 percent of the visible universe.

Van Herpen has taken this overwhelmingly cosmic state of matter and asked an almost absurdly couture question:

Can it be worn?

The answer begins with glass.

Two floating, lunar-like forms of hand-blown glass contain the plasma, glowing with an intense red luminosity around the body. The forms are not passive vessels. They are designed to respond to human touch, making the wearer part of the electrical system surrounding the garment. The body’s own electromagnetic presence can influence the plasma, turning movement and touch into visible changes in the work.

The wearer doesn’t simply activate the dress. She completes it.

Then comes the couture.

Approximately 10,000 hand-blown glass spheres are arranged across illusion tulle, graduating in scale and bonded using ultraviolet light. The labour is microscopic, obsessive and intensely physical: thousands of individual glass elements assembled into an architecture that ultimately appears almost weightless.

This is the paradox of Van Herpen.

The closer she gets to the immaterial, the more extraordinary the material labour becomes. Glass. Tulle. Electricity. Plasma. Skin. Five radically different substances and systems are made to coexist around one human body. And that body is no longer merely the mannequin on which couture is displayed. It becomes a conductor.

Traditional clothing creates a boundary between the body and the outside world. Helix Nebula makes that boundary porous. The garment becomes an interface between biological electricity and ionised matter; a piece of fashion that exists through interaction rather than simply through construction. It is couture as a physical event. And this is precisely where Sonic Starquakes becomes more than a spectacular theme.

Van Herpen’s starting point is the idea that stars are not silent objects but vibrating bodies. A starquake produces waves that travel through a star, allowing scientists to study its interior through those vibrations. The collection translates this cosmic language of oscillation, resonance, turbulence and energy into clothing. The runway therefore becomes a strange kind of observatory. Except the instruments are dresses.

The inspiration ranges across supernovae, galaxies, stellar vibrations and plasma, but Van Herpen avoids the obvious fashion shorthand of celestial prints and metallic futurism. There are no embroidered constellations pretending to be the cosmos.

Instead, she asks fashion to behave more like the cosmos. To vibrate. To respond. To transform. To exist in unstable states.

That has always been the intellectual engine of Van Herpen’s work. Her collaborations and experiments have repeatedly crossed fashion with architecture, science, technology, sculpture and the natural sciences. Her clothes have been generated through 3D printing, laser cutting, kinetic structures, experimental materials and biological references. With Helix Nebula, the ambition becomes more radical because the material itself refuses the conventions of the garment.

Plasma has no fixed shape. Couture traditionally depends on shape. Van Herpen makes the contradiction the point. Her own description of the project is almost a manifesto:

“For years, I have been drawn to the idea of creating a garment woven from energy alone.”

The sentence is not simply poetic. It describes the trajectory of her practice: away from clothing as a fixed object and toward clothing as a dynamic system. Glass and tulle still tether the work to the physical world, but plasma introduces something fundamentally unstable—matter whose behaviour depends on energy, charge and electromagnetic fields.

And suddenly the old hierarchy of fashion looks rather inadequate. Fabric is no longer necessarily the protagonist. Silhouette is no longer necessarily fixed. The garment need not be inert. The wearer need not be passive. The dress can react.

Fashion becomes responsive matter.

This is why Helix Nebula matters beyond the spectacle of seeing something glow on a couture runway. It proposes a different definition of luxury. The ultimate luxury may not be rarity of material, but access to phenomena that ordinarily belong beyond the human scale.

We cannot hold a star. We cannot touch a nebula. We cannot put the Sun around our shoulders. But for a brief moment, Van Herpen constructs an approximation of that impossible intimacy: charged matter glowing within hand-blown glass, surrounded by thousands of individually made spheres, activated through contact with the human body.

The effect is not science fiction.

It is science translated into couture.

And that translation is Van Herpen’s real medium.

She is not interested in making a dress that looks futuristic.

She is interested in asking what a dress might become when the future’s technologies, sciences and ideas are allowed to change its fundamental behaviour.

Helix Nebula therefore sits somewhere between garment, sculpture, scientific experiment and performance. It is worn, but it is also activated, constructed, yet responsive; intensely handmade, yet built around a state of matter with no fixed form. It pushes couture beyond the static object and toward something atmospheric.

As Van Herpen puts it, glass and tulle still hold the plasma “to the earth”—but they bring her closer to a vision of couture woven from energy alone.

And suddenly, the future of fashion looks less like a wardrobe and more like a field of energy around the body.

The fourth state of matter has entered haute couture.
